Down the yellow brick road (again)

When you think you're off to see the wizard (the docs in India of course!) and doing what needs to be done...getting on BCP, going to my RE, waiting for my protocol, meds, retrieval, ect....the wicked witch come by with her broom stick and wacks u....my point is:

Indian customs have NEW rules as of 9/30/10, our dear Greg at Cryo Lab and another person who was hand carrying a shipment of embryo's for Dr. Pai (Lilavati Hospital) were detained. They are now imposing a tax on embryo's it could range from 25-40%.

This is the email i woke up to:
Dear Amanda,
I am sorry but I really dont have some great news.

One of the shipments of our USA client came through Greg, Core Cryo Lab. Unfortuantely it was stuck with Customs. Post this, another shipment of Dr Pai also got stuck at Customs, which was brought by some one as Hand Carried. This has brought in new issues with Indian customs and they want to charge the recipient a cost for receiving embryos. Theyare playing with around 25-40% duty tax on the cost of production of embryos. As it was never levied, they are not sure of how to levy this charges, and thus planning new systems to incorporate. WIth this, there is an rticle in News paper today, where customs tried to defame dr Pai with bad comments. This all is not so great, and we are not sure how it go further,. Simply put, the shipment can come to INdia, but yes there will be added cost to it. The amount? Frankly not sure. It can be just 500$ to 2500$ or more may be.'

Thought i need to update you. THis new thing will indeed upset all the cases in India at large level. Hopefully we have some solution.

Wow, that is crazy. Nothing like giving advanced notice to people. Yikes. Hope it all works out. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Think positive. Take care

What the?!?! How can you impose a tax on something that every single time it was produced was at a diferent cost??? If they want to impose a levy, it needs to be a flat rate per shipment. Knowing how much you'd get slugged up front would help decide which way to go - cycle at home and ship, or egg retrieval in India. I'd really like to see the article that was in the paper...

This applies to Mumbai only. It's not the production value it's the resale value. It's like when you complete a customs declaration for anything you send overseas, you have to put a value and declare what it is, or the item could be deemed an import. No such thing is happening in Delhi, we had embies arrive yesterday with no issue at all. . Someone in Mumbai customs is being diligent and reading the rule book. The Mumbai docs should be able to sort this out with a visit to customs.
